We know. Your bracket is shot. No one had this Final Four. Only a crackhead, right?

Virginia Commonwealth from the Colonial League. An 11-seed. They pantsed Kansas. It may take years for them to recover in Lawrence.

Butler, again. First team from the basketball-rich state of Indiana to make back-to-back Final Fours.

UConn and Kentucky, well, they’re not total surprises given their legacies. But still. No 1-seed, no  2-seed. Unreal.

There are upsets, and there are upsets. Any time Duke loses in the NCAA Tournament, it feels like a big deal. When the Blue Devils are a 1-seed and don’t get past the Sweet Sixteen? That’s a big deal.

Hats off to the Arizona Wildcats of the Pac-10 Conference. They opened a can on the Dukies, beating them 93-77 to advance to the Elite Eight.

We like round numbers in life, and especially in Sport. 300 wins and 500 home runs are our ending-in-zero favorites for determining the magnitude of a Major League Baseball career. In the NBA, a 50-win season has some basic resonance as to how successful a season a team has enjoyed. Such is also the case when a basketball player scores 20 points per game on average. And so on.

Trying to wrap your brain around 900 career victories is a little like trying to taste your tongue. It’s hard.

Quite a weekend, if you happened to be following that little college basketball tournament going on right now.

2-seed North Carolina went to the wire before beating Washington. 2-seed San Diego State needed two overtimes to put away Temple. 1-seed Duke squeaked by Michigan by two points.

And those weren’t even the upsets.

The Sweet Sixteen includes an 8 seed (Butler), a 12-seed (Richmond), and two 11-seeds (Marquette and Virginia Commonwealth). And dig those who have already left the dance. Wow.

Well, then. How about that NCAA Tournament?

It never fails to deliver the goods. Sorry about it, Louisville. Sorry about it, Vandy. Some of the higher seeds have to die for the legend of the tournament to live. These are the rules.
